02 / Hagerman heritage
The modern town’s founding is one chapter in a much longer regional story. Water, movement, agriculture, education, and community effort have repeatedly reshaped life here.
Before the town
Long before a townsite was surveyed, Indigenous peoples lived in and traveled through the wider southeastern New Mexico region. National Park Service histories document millennia of human use and later Mescalero Apache presence. Hagerman’s story belongs inside that longer regional history, not at its beginning.
1889-1890
The Northern Canal became the first large cooperative irrigation effort in the Pecos River basin. The system ran south toward Hagerman and became widely known as the Hagerman Canal, helping make sustained agriculture possible in an arid landscape.
1893-1894
The Pecos Valley Town Company purchased the future town land in 1893. In 1894, J. J. Hagerman selected and platted a 67.02-acre site near the Felix and Pecos rivers. The new post office was first called Felix.
1894
The Pecos Valley railroad reached Roswell, linking farms and ranches to larger markets. Rail and irrigation worked together: settlers arrived, while fruit, alfalfa, livestock, and wool could move farther and faster.
1905
The post office name changed from Felix to Hagerman on February 27. Residents then petitioned Chaves County, and the town was formally incorporated on July 5, 1905.
Then & now
Agriculture and dairy remain important across Chaves County, and schools remain central community institutions. Bobcat Esports continues that pattern of adaptation: local students using new tools to learn, compete, and carry Hagerman’s name beyond the valley.

It is organized, coached competition built around team practices, scheduled matches, eligibility rules, sportsmanship, and student development. It is not simply playing games after school.
Players must meet school and activity eligibility requirements, attend required practices, and complete any title-specific evaluation or tryout process.
Yes. Students can contribute through broadcasting, shoutcasting, graphic design, video editing, web work, social media, photography, and event operations.
The team focuses on competition. World of Esports explores the larger ecosystem, including production, media, technology, careers, digital citizenship, and the systems that make an esports program run.
